Vermont State Senator George Aiken on a visit to the region in 1949 said, "This is such beautiful country up here- it should be called the Northeast Kingdom." The former Vermont Governor is given credit for popularizing the name. Historical accounts say that Gov. Aiken was speaking before a development group at the Darling Inn on Depot Street in Lyndonville when he first used the phrase in a public forum. The Governor Aiken room offers the ultimate in comfort and elegance.

In the early 1900s the George Conley family operated a farm on Lake Willoughby that also served as a boarding house for road workmen. In 1909 the Robert Frost family rented a tent-site on the lake next to what is now the Robert Frost Cottage . As a result of their stay, Frost became inspired by Mrs. Conley and wrote his famous poem “A Servant to Servants” in 1914. The original farmhouse was eventually demolished and new structures were built and rebuilt over time. The structure that was completed in 1987 is now the WilloughVale Inn.
Accommodates up to 4 guests. Pets are not allowed.
